The Hoakalei Cultural Foundation asked Haseko for assistance in organizing another Cultural Resource Planning Workshop to encourage Michael Lee to share knowledge about sites specifically within the mauka end of the Kauhale Preserve that he had mentioned to the ‘Ewa Neighborhood Board. To encourage an open, productive discussion, Haseko invited representatives from a  wide variety of community groups and organizations, such as the ‘Ewa-Pu‘uloa Hawaiian Civic Club, Office of Hawaiian Affairs, Pu‘uloa Outrigger Canoe Club, Halau Hula ‘o Hoakalei, State Historic Preservation Division and the O‘ahu Island Burial Council, to come together to listen to what he had to say, and provide additional insight and context to what is known about the area. Archaeologist Tom Dye and Cultural Historian Kepa Maly helped facilitate the conversation. Three dozen people generously shared their time and mana‘o this morning about the Kauhale Preserve, and we all look forward to receiving specific information from Michael Lee and other interested people in the future.

A scan of the sign-in sheet from this morning’s workshop is posted below. Participants were asked to submit their comments, suggestions and feedback about the workshop – and in the interest of complete transparency, all information submitted will be posted to this blog to allow the community at large to participate and remain updated about our efforts to implement the preservation plan for Kauhale.

On March 6, the Hoakalei Cultural Foundation sponsored a service project to prepare the wetland preservation area in the Kauhale Preserve for nesting season. Volunteers from the Foundation, ‘Ewa-Pu‘uloa Hawaiian Civic Club, Pu‘uloa Outrigger Canoe Club, Boys & Girls Club of Hawai‘i Hale Pono ‘Ewa Beach Clubhouse, Hoakalei Country Club and Haseko helped remove pickleweed by hand to clear the area for the Hawaiian Stilts. You can read more about the project and see photos from the work day on the Foundation’s website at: www.hoakaleifoundation.org.
